Anchor textI never really realized the power in the anchor text in your backlinks until I was scooping round a bit. I used to run a website Secunda.co.za which is a local town website. One of my partners bought it in 1998 which is a real long time back…

In that time (the 90s) they started building websites for people all over (which is real ugly) and all the websites had a link back to this town website Secunda.co.za.

So the other day I was looking at a couple of websites built in that time and I saw the backlinks which were mostly images with “alt” in the image tags. All the links pointed to Secunda.co.za and another website and the anchor text was “club Internet” and “club Internet link”.

“Club Internet” you might think! Well it was in the 90s so to have internet was like being in a club, very small.

This is what shocked me:

The Secunda website ranks #1 – #2 in google south africa for this phrase and there is NO text like this inside the whole website! I mean none! No Club Internet here!

I was truly amazed with this, I have underestimated the power of the ANCHOR TEXT. I am now experimenting with anchor text to this blog, “affiliate marketing”. If all goes well I will be ranking #1 in google south africa with the next pagerank update.

Well, let’s see…

I’d already guessed that the anchor text was the most important part. If you think about it, it makes sense – the anchor text is what the user sees and reacts to. Users don’t neccessarily see and react to Meta tags, do they?

The thing with using this tactic to build pagerank (etc), is that you have to post that link w/anchor text on other sites. And since most WordPress blogs have the nofollow thing, it could take a while…

Well, good luck! :)

Anchor Text combines with other seo technique will bring you at the top of Google Search PAge

Yes, anchor text and alt tags are very powerful and often underutilized opportunities to “SEO” your pages and gain top rankings at the Search Engines.

At my http://www.smart-travel-germany.com site, for instance, up to 70% of the referrer traffic comes from top rankings at image searches on the three biggest Search Engines, and most pages are listed in the Top 10 in the normal SERP.

You can accomplish a lot with proper anchor text and alt tags. I’d just make sure to keep it real.

On one site, I put my images in a folder that uses the site’s keywords. So the path to the image would be sitename/blue/widgets/blue_widget.jpg. No idea if it helps, but on a site that has more pictures than words, every bit matters.

For me, the anchor text that you speak of, has gotten me the best results in MSN. :)

I have had a few #1 top rankings for high competitive words on msn, by using the anchor text techniques.

Thanks for sharing. :) I will try it on my site as well. I would like to be rated 1st for SA. If that is ever possible.
