Ever wanted to get your article from your site on the Digg homepage?

We all know that people whom got it right to get on the Digg homepage received thousands of traffic to their site for a couple of days. Here is one example of many: JohnCow.com

But how easy or hard is it really. Well it’s actually very basic and understandable to get there but there are certain things that have to be in order like:

  • The article must be original
  • Must be a very good article
  • Good images in article helps
  • Blog/website must be appealing

And also lots of other things like getting 51 Diggs in 1 hour. You have 51 friends?

The Issue with Digg

While the concept of getting on the Digg homepage is very nice, it just not good traffic at all. Most people that landed on there said that the bounce rate is sky high and it just lasts for 1 – 3 days. So there isn’t much point on doing it, unless you have another strategy.

If you really want to look more into getting on there here is a very practical guide from Neil Patel: Beginners Guide to Digg

Then I found an alternative to the Digg Effect

It’s called Stumbleupon! No you won’t get 40 000 visitors to your site in one day, but you won’t also get those ridiculously high bounce rates. And all this time I missed out on some good traffic from Stumbleupon…

Last week one of my posts was stumbled and I received 264 visits from Stumbleupon in a matter of 10 minutes!

StumbleUpon Traffic

As you can see the bounce rate is very low and 96.21 people were new to my blog. That is some great traffic I think! And the good thing is, every day I still receive traffic from Stumbleupon.

After a bit of thinking I realised the reason I received that much traffic in 10 minutes was because I blogged about something that just happened and people on Stumbleupon was looking for it? That’s my theory.

I am most sure going to do some more research into Stumbleupon and getting the most out of it.

I don’t know stumbleapon at all, but it sounds good

One of the posts on my Wordpress blog – called “7 steps to better writing” – was stumbled, and got 330 visits in less than 24 hours. Since then, the post has had almost 700 views. And that was close to the end of last year.

Stumbleupon rocks ;) Plus, it doesn’t know which sites you own, so you can stumble yours and your friends’ for maximum effect…

Stumbleupon is a fantastic source of traffic and if you’ve written something worthwhile, you’ll see traffic arriving from stumble for days on end! I’ve published a few articles which have seen thousands of hits over a two week space, which is darn good.

As you said, the bounce rates for Digg are bad and for Stumble they are good, I completely agree. Digg supplies a massive income of traffic all at once of which most people vanish right afterwards. The stumbling for my articles has also resulted in people hanging around and reading other posts. A good thing for Stumble is a ‘related posts’ plugin for Wordpress as many users will read the article and then click through to similar articles :)

Thanks for a good post bud!

Thanks Wogan and Chris. Great idea you have there Chris having a Related Posts on your blog posts :)

I have receive just a little over 200 from Stumple Upon in two days which I am very happy with.

Nice! My stumbles have a little higher bounce rate than yours: 54.96%, but its still good. Reddit has a bouncerate of 82.16%, but they thought my story was about something else, so that could explain it. Digg is better than I thought and has a bouncerate of 69.33% for me.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tip. I’m going to try Stumble right away. I can do a lot with such free traffic. :-)

01.20.08

@soundtrackgeek – Still a good ratio you got there, not like Entrecard’s 79% =)

01.20.08

well… mine is at 91%, wow 79% is very good! But to be fair, you have a niche that “everyone” likes, even me ;) . So I expect the bouncerate to be high from entrecard, but its worth it for those few users who actually like my blog :)

stumbleupon is great I agree. I have over 3,000 visitors from stumbleupon in a month. It’s consistent to, and every time somebody new stumbles one of your old articles you get a flood of real traffic.

01.20.08

I think that building relationships on social networks is the basis for getting your article read by more reliable readers who can then judge the content and help it elevate with real traffic. Thereafter, your article becomes a trend. The digg and stumble effect is more effective when the readers get what they came looking for. So overall, social networking relationships and good content creates traffic + earnings.

I also did a post about StumbleUpon a while back and I’ve been having visitors from it daily. The count isn’t that high, but around 10-50 a day still works :)

SU is really great. Infact it is one of the top traffic sources on my site. It is like putting up a NOS on your site :D

01.20.08

Many people said that stumbleupon doesn’t bring quality traffic for adsense clicks. But try by yourself as I would do myself.

01.20.08

Stumble Upon is one of my favorite sites. I also love EntryCard.
They both have been a great source of traffic for my blogs. too
Great blogging!

SU is definitely a good way to get traffic, especially if you’re doing it right. Personally, I think Digg is just simply overrated and has a bunch of whiny babies on there that just bitch 24/7.

Lol Jay, I know what you mean with Digg.

01.20.08

I’m still loving Digg :) Although, my account was removed for some reason, which I still can’t get to the bottom of :’(

01.20.08

You might not believe, but one particular article of mine has received over 120,000 visits from SU till date. Traffic did not come on only one day, but I did receive 9,912 visits on the first day. I have also made the digg frontpage twice, first time my server could not servive it and the other time the story got burried after 3 minutes of hitting FP. Also, the day before I was about to get a story to FP when it got burried. It had received 41 diggs in the first 3 hours and then got burried because diggers would have not wanted kevin rose to notice it. If you are interested, I can post the links here. Take care

Thank you. Here is the article that has got me 120000 hits.

This particular article was featured on digg but My server went down.

And the last one: This one was capable of getting featured on the FP, but the if it had hit, Kevin Rose would have disabled this hack.

Thanks Uzair, I will have a look into it. It’s a hot article in the times that we are and that’s why it went big, I think.

01.20.08

Ya Phillip. Exactly. That was the reason I wrote it, but I made a mistake. I had to switch to a stronger server first. If I had switched, the story would have been different with my blog.
